Introduction
The Vakil bazaar is one of the finest examples of bazaars in Iran. Traditionally, Vakil Bazaar has been the commercial heart of Shiraz. It was built during the 18th century by the order of Karim Khan Zand. Besides the bazaar, this complex includes Vakil Mosque and the Vakil bathhouse as well.
The idea behind creating such complexes is to provide the essential necessities so the shop owners could easily have access to the things needed without closing their shops.
History
When Shiraz became the capital of Iran during the Zand Dynasty, this bazaar was created to facilitate the trade in Shiraz. The rent that was collected was used to pay the security and upkeep the bazaar itself, making the rent quite cheap. This bazaar brought merchants, craftsmen and caravans from throughout Iran together.
Architecture
The design and architecture of bazaars throughout cultural Iran follow almost a similar pattern.
The main features of Vakil Bazaar include the following:
- Stone flooring: It is a durable material and needs low maintenance as well. By elevating the shops, it helps the shopkeepers to protect their products from rain and dust.
- Brick vaults: the vault is almost 10 metres long. It has openings on the ceiling, which helps with light and air circulation. Combining it with the stone flooring, it drops the temperature in hot summers of Shiraz.
- Five main entrances: it helps connect the bazaar to different streets and provides easier access to the bazaar for the locals.
- Cross-shaped design: creating a central dome crossing with the main corridors.
