Discovering Tehran

Today you’ll explore Tehran, the political and cultural heart of modern Iran and the country’s capital for more than two centuries.

Begin your day at the magnificent Golestan Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the former royal residence of the Qajar dynasty. Most of the palace complex dates to the 19th century, when traditional Persian craftsmanship was beautifully blended with European and Russian artistic influences. Wander through its elegant halls, mirrored chambers, colorful tilework, and tranquil gardens while discovering the fascinating history of Iran’s royal past.

Continue to the historic Grand Bazaar of Tehran, a sprawling maze of covered alleys that has served as the city’s commercial center for centuries. Beyond its vibrant atmosphere and countless traditional shops, the bazaar also played an important role during the events leading to the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

Next, visit the National Museum of Iran, home to one of the country’s finest collections of archaeological treasures. Its remarkable exhibits trace Iran’s history from prehistoric civilizations through the great Persian empires and into the Islamic era.

Later in the day, fly to the beautiful city of Shiraz.

The Cultural Treasures of Shiraz

Wake up in Shiraz, the city of poetry, gardens, and timeless elegance.

Your day begins at the breathtaking Nasir al-Mulk Mosque, better known as the Pink Mosque. Built during the late 19th century, this architectural masterpiece is best experienced in the morning, when sunlight pours through its colorful stained-glass windows and transforms the prayer hall into a dazzling display of vibrant colors.

Next, admire the impressive Karim Khan Citadel from the outside. Built during the Zand Dynasty, this massive fortress once served as the residence of Karim Khan Zand and remains one of Shiraz’s most recognizable landmarks.

Continue to the historic Vakil Bazaar, where you’ll wander through its vaulted passageways filled with carpets, spices, handicrafts, jewelry, and traditional workshops. Be sure to explore its beautifully preserved caravanserai, a reminder of Shiraz’s importance along historic trade routes.

Conclude your day at the peaceful Tomb of Hafez, one of Persia’s greatest poets. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, this beloved landmark offers a perfect introduction to the rich literary heritage that has shaped Persian culture for centuries.

Persepolis, Naqsh-e Rostam & Pasargadae

Today you’ll journey through the heart of the ancient Achaemenid Empire before arriving in the historic desert city of Yazd.

Your first destination is the legendary Persepolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded by Darius the Great around 518 BC as the ceremonial capital of the Persian Empire. Walk among its monumental staircases, towering columns, and magnificent stone reliefs while discovering the grandeur of one of history’s most influential civilizations. Although Persepolis was destroyed following Alexander the Great’s conquest of Persia in 330 BC, its impressive ruins remain one of the world’s greatest archaeological treasures.

Continue to Naqsh-e Rostam, the royal necropolis of the Achaemenid kings. Here, the monumental tombs of Darius the Great and his successors are carved high into the cliffs, creating one of Iran’s most remarkable historical landscapes.

Your final stop before reaching Yazd is Pasargadae, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and the first capital of the Achaemenid Empire. Here you’ll visit the elegant Tomb of Cyrus the Great, founder of the Persian Empire and one of antiquity’s most respected rulers.

Exploring Ancient Yazd

Today is dedicated to discovering Yazd, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated at the crossroads of ancient trade routes linking Persia with Central Asia and India, Yazd remains the spiritual center of Iran’s Zoroastrian community.

Begin your exploration at the Tower of Silence, where you’ll learn about ancient Zoroastrian funerary traditions. Until the early 20th century, the deceased were brought here as part of a ritual designed to preserve the purity of the natural elements.

Next, visit the Zoroastrian Fire Temple, home to a sacred flame that has burned continuously for more than 1,500 years.

Continue to the impressive Amir Chakhmaq Complex, one of Yazd’s most iconic landmarks and an important setting for traditional Shia religious ceremonies.

Experience another unique aspect of Persian culture by attending a traditional Zurkhaneh performance. Combining martial arts, strength training, music, and spirituality, this ancient practice—known as Pahlevani—was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.

Next, admire the magnificent Jame Mosque of Yazd, renowned for its stunning blue tilework and the tallest minarets in Iran.

Conclude the day at Dowlat Abad Garden, one of Iran’s UNESCO-listed Persian Gardens. Famous for its elegant pavilion, colorful stained-glass windows, and the world’s tallest adobe windcatcher, the garden beautifully demonstrates the ingenuity of traditional Persian architecture.

From Yazd to Isfahan

Leaving Yazd behind, today’s journey takes you toward Isfahan, one of the most magnificent cities of the Safavid Empire.

Your first stop is the historic town of Meybod, where you’ll visit a beautifully preserved Safavid caravanserai that once welcomed merchants traveling along the Silk Road.

Continue to the town’s traditional Ice House (Yakhchal), an ingenious structure that demonstrates how Persians produced and stored ice in the desert centuries before modern refrigeration.

Next, visit the historic Pigeon Tower, another remarkable example of Safavid engineering that played an important role in Persian agriculture.

On the way to Isfahan, stop in Naein to visit one of Iran’s oldest mosques, celebrated for its understated beauty and early Islamic architectural features.

By evening, arrive in Isfahan, the glorious Safavid capital once known as “Nesf-e Jahan” or “Half the World” for its unrivaled beauty and architectural splendor.

Kashan & Return to Tehran

Leaving Isfahan behind, travel north to the historic city of Kashan, often regarded as one of the finest examples of traditional Persian culture.

Your first stop is the beautiful Fin Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Iran’s most celebrated Persian Gardens. With its flowing water channels, towering cypress trees, and elegant pavilions, the garden perfectly embodies the ancient Persian concept of paradise.

Continue to the magnificent Boroujerdi House, a masterpiece of 19th-century Persian residential architecture. Admire its graceful courtyards, elaborate stucco decorations, beautiful stained-glass windows, and ingenious windcatchers that naturally cooled the residence during the desert summers.

After exploring Kashan, continue your journey back to Tehran.
